As adults, we expect certain consequences of aging including appearance of fine wrinkles, decrease in overall skin elasticity and even thinning hair. Understanding how the hair growth cycle works, what should be considered normal, and the steps that adults can take in order to keep their hair growing, is one way to remain youthful looking and promote a healthy hair cycle over the years.

The Hair Growth Cycle
Hair growth is essentially a four-phase cycle:
Growth, anagen
Transition, catagen
Rest, telogen; and
Shedding|New Hair Replacement, exogen

In the first stage of the hair growth cycle, the hair grows from the follicle beneath the skin for a duration of two to seven years, determining the length of hair. Nourished by blood vessels, each hair will go through the above four stages. The second, transition phase lasts for approximately 10 days, where the follicle will shrink. Following transition, for three months, the hair will rest. Finally, old hair is ready to shed and be replaced by new hair in the final stage of the hair growth cycle.

Normal Scalp Changes
Normally, adult hair sheds approximately 50 to 150 individual hairs per day. Normal scalp changes facilitate this shedding. Adversely, thinning hair and hair loss can be prevalent in both men and women due to age, stress, unhealthy diet, smoking and excessive styling product application. In addition to that, women are particularly prone to experiencing hair loss because of hormonal changes, post-pregnancy or from chemicals in contraceptives.

Maintaining a Healthy Hair Cycle
Adults can promote and maintain a healthy hair cycle by staying as healthy as possible and avoiding pollutants like cigarettes and chemically made hair products. Despite having a healthy hair cycle, hair loss conditions can still occur. Fortunately, technology allows men and women to enjoy hair restoration as an affordable solution in the event hair loss becomes predominate.
