Is Your Hairloss Normal?

Everyone goes through the natural process of shedding hair, but it can still be rather scary. No one is particularly thrilled to find a clump of hair sticking out of the drain after a shower. So, the question is, what amount of hair loss is considered normal? At what point should you seek treatment and make an appointment with hair restoration professionals like Apollo Hair Restoration.

Most healthy people have approximately 100,000 hairs on top of their heads, and we naturally lose about 125 hairs a day in shedding. Because of the cycles of our hair, it goes through periods of growing and resting and shedding. Once the hair falls out, the follicle goes back to a growth stage, then it rests during a period where growth stops, and then the hair is shed again. Rinse and repeat!

This means that at any given time, anywhere between 80-90% of your hair follicles are growing while the rest is either in the resting stage or shedding. If you're losing more than 125 hairs a day, then your hair loss is no longer considered just shedding – but rather, it could be an issue with deeper roots that needs to be examined and treated accordingly.

One common explanation could be stress. Both emotional and physical stress can often lead to hair loss. Other possibilities you’re experiencing hair loss include a change in diet or a change in any medications you use (including some antidepressants, birth control, and acne prescriptions).

Sometimes, hair loss can be perfectly normal. However, if you're concerned that your hair loss is due to something more serious, we offer a free hair and scalp consultation to determine the cause of your hair loss!
