Anti-Valentine's Day

For some, it’s the most romantic time of the year. Roses, hearts, and love are in the air. It’s time to show your significant other than you love them by buying them things and spending a bunch of money on a fancy dinner so y’all can take pictures of your chef-created entrees and post them to Instagram to get those sweet, sweet likes! Just kidding. This is the time of the year that a lot of people hate. In particular, men. I, myself, am a man, and there are some years where I’m all about it, and some years I absolutely hate it. Let’s fuel the hate.

So, gentlemen (and ladies who also hate Valentine’s Day), let’s talk about some hairstyles you can wear during your Anti-Valentine’s Day celebration.

We’re just going to start with my favorite. I’m pulling out all the stops. For Anti-V-Day (we’ll call it AVD for the sake of me crying everytime I type it out), my go-to ‘do is a nice, matted down, roll-outta-bed-and-not-give-a-you-know-what style. To get this style, on Valentine’s Day morning (but definitely not too early), you have to wake up and walk straight to the bathroom. Once you’re in there, look at yourself in the mirror with pure disgust, take both hands, pretend to rip your hair out (don’t actually do it), and then brush your teeth. From here, we won’t focus on your hair for the rest of the day. We also aren’t leaving the house. What we’re going for here is a real carefree gypsie vibe. We are free-spirited and don’t need to be in a relationship. We love ourselves. And we show that by giving ourselves an entire day full of wiry, greasy, unkempt hair. It’s relieving and refreshing, even if the smell of your hair isn’t.

After you brush your teeth, make your way to the kitchen, because you need coffee to get through this corporate-made, money-grubbing day. Yes, this is still part of the hairstyle. When that coffee is finally in your mug, you can begin to actually wake up by plopping down on the couch with your coffee and a bag of Cheetos. Grab the remote before you open that bag, you don’t want cheesy bits getting in all the buttons! Turn on Netflix, kick your legs back, and surf the endless Netflix catalog for the next hour, without actually choosing something. Brace yourself, because you’ve just searched all through Netflix’s seasonal choices, which all happen to be love stories that make you sick. What you’re going to do here is land on Gossip Girl. It’s dramatic, there’s love, hate, breakups, deceit, and a little mystery to the whole question “Who is Gossip Girl!?!?!” Plus, there’s enough episodes to last all day and then some. Rip open that bag of Cheetos and select “Season 1: Episode 1”, and get ready to be as lazy as possible for the day.

You’re on Episode 4 and enough drama has happened for you to get those cheesy fingers running through your greasy locks, adding to that beautiful, free-spirited hairdo! It’s mid-afternoon, and you look like you just got attacked by a rabid squirrel. It’s perfection. Who needs hairspray when you have enough natural grease in your hair to move it, shape it, or mold it any which way you want? The Cheetos aren’t going to be enough though, so get on that Postmates app and get you some down and dirty Chinese food. Americanized. None of that real stuff. We want all the MSG today, baby! You’re gonna splurge today. But only on yourself, and only on your calorie count. Because we aren’t leaving the house.

You finished season 1 of Gossip Girl. Somewhere in the middle, you took a nap after that Chinese food hit hard. Good thing the plot isn’t that great and you can literally pick up anywhere in the show and know what’s happening! It’s now 9PM. You can’t get on social media because of all the sappy posts. You’re Gossipped out, and you could really extend this nap for another 10-12 hours. So what you’re going to do now is wash the cheese off your hands, but not out of your hair. Brush your teeth one more time. Look at yourself with disgust again, but with a little more humor, because you know that once the sun rises, you’re back on your feet, hopefully in the shower, and moving on with your life! You’ve given yourself a day of grief. Now get yourself together and love life for the next 364 days until the next AVD! That’s actually the only acceptable hairstyle for Anti-Valentine’s Day (*crying*). It’s my favorite. My go-to. Feel free to switch it up and watch The Notebook for some real feels. But make sure you don’t fix that hair on AVD! Give yourself some freedom… and Cheetos.

Don’t have hair to fix on AVD? Perfect. Apollo Hair Replacement of Dallas/Fort Worth offers free consultations on how to help you grow back thinning hair or remedy your balding. Everyone deserves the opportunity to lose food in their hair when they hate V-Day, so call Apollo today. Get your hair back. Get your life back!

Happy Anti-Valentine’s Day (*crying again*)!

That V-Day Hair

Well, it’s that time of the year again! Pink everything. Hearts. Roses. Cupid. CHOCOLATE! Your New Year’s Resolution to get fit is about to pay off for the first time in two ways. You’ll get to stuff your face with delicious sweets and you’ll also be bombshelling it on your Valentine’s Day dinner date. Let’s face it, all of these things are great, but it’s time to start thinking about that date. What are you gonna wear? What color lipstick? (Red, of course.) And the biggest question of all… what are you going to do with your hair?!

Valentine’s Day is a special day when your significant other takes you out to a fancy restaurant for a lovely, romantic dinner. It’s hard for us all not to want to look our best on those dates. Your hair is the focal point of your head. But it doesn’t have to be extravagant like prom or a wedding. But a nice hairdo will set the sparks flying immediately. So let’s talk about some different ways to style those locks for the most romantic day of the year!

You don’t have to go this crazy, but there are a few ways to put V-Day spirit in your hair… by using hearts! I don’t mean clipping hearts into your hair. I mean transforming your hairdo into a cute heart! For example, you could rock a double braid in the back then comes together at the end, forming a heart, much like the image below.

You can also rock a heart bun. This is a cute, loose style of hair where most of it falls, but the dainty heart looks beautiful.

Massage That Scalp!

I can’t put into words how important it is to have a healthy scalp. It’s what your hair grows out of and it’s what keeps your hair healthy. If your scalp is unhealthy, you could have issues like itching and irritation, dandruff, thinning hair, and even see clumps of hair falling out. One of the best ways to keep your scalp in tip top shape is to get a scalp massage (or give yourself a scalp massage)!

Who doesn’t like a good massage? They relieve muscle aches, tension, and knots. A massage relaxes the body and gives you a restart from all the standing, sitting, walking, running, working out, or just plain working that you’ve done over the past however many months. It really is a rejuvenation of the body, and it’s a healthy, natural way to reset. But what about a scalp massage? Massaging the scalp and hair with warm oil infused with hair-friendly herbs is a great way to nourish the scalp. It also relaxes your mind and nervous system, promotes sound sleep and may help your memory too. A warm oil massage once a week conditions the scalp, helping to prevent flakes, dryness, and itchiness. It also helps enhance blood circulation in the head and neck. Stress can cause your scalp to be tight (or at least feel that way, and circulation is imperative to help relax the head. A scalp massage also helps strengthen the roots of the hair and nourishes the hair-shafts and follicles, promoting new hair growth and strengthening existing hair.

Some of the different types of oils you can use a base for your scalp massage are:

  • Coconut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Almond oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Olive oil

It may sound a little weird to put things like olive oil on your hair and scalp, but it’s a replenishing, healthy oil that can relax the scalp and make your hair shiny and beautiful.

Not only does a scalp massage promote healthy hair and hair growth, it can relieve headaches and muscle tension. These massages can take as little as 15 minutes or up to an hour. You can do it on the go or in the relaxation of your own bathtub. It’s a versatile way to keep healthy hair and a stress- and headache-free day.

Keep in mind that scalp massages shouldn’t be aggressive pushing like a deep-tissue massage, but more of a gentle touch with a very little amount of pressure. If you’re using oils during your scalp massage, be sure to cover your entire scalp with the oils, and get past just the hair. You want it on the scalp before you start your therapeutic rubbing. You can let the oils rest for up to an hour to promote healthy, shiny hair!

Hair Tip: Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is a remedy for multiple things, including achy muscles, sleep deprivation, and it can even help detox your body. What many people don’t know is that Epsom salt can also be used to volumize your hair, and even strengthen it and promote growth!

Epsom salt crystals contain magnesium and sulfur, both of which are traditionally used in mineral baths. These two minerals provide great health benefits when used correctly, and can be a game changer for your flat, thin hair.

You can do a few different things with Epsom salt and your hair. If you want, mix it equal parts with a conditioner and use the conditioner as normal, leaving it in your hair for 1-2 minutes while showering. The Epsom salts will add volume to your hair and even help exfoliate your scalp. These salts remove the unnatural oils from your scalp and follicles, and create healthier, stronger hair and scalp.

There are a few things to be wary about when using Epsom salt though. First, don’t use these salts if you have color-treated hair. The reaction between the magnesium and your hair color may cause the color to fade. So try to only use Epsom salts with your natural hair color. Another thing to be aware of is, with many things, overusing Epsom salt could cause damage, not benefits. If you overuse these salts, you could notice a dryer scalp and even irritation. It’s recommended that you use Epsom salts in your hair a maximum of 2-3 times per week to avoid over usage.

Other than those potential issues, your hair will be looking bouncy and full in no time! If you really want to double up on these miracle salts, take an Epsom salt bath to ease and relax those muscles, then use the conditioner/shampoo mix as well! You’ll be feeling 100% and have beautiful, healthy hair!

Dry Shampoo and Hair Loss

It’s 6:00am and your alarm is screaming in your ear, begging you to get up and get ready for work. You had a little bit of wine last night, and we all know that makes you want to slap that snooze button on your phone at least 5 times. You want that extra 20 minutes of sleep, and you can afford it because you aren’t washing your hair this morning. You’re dry shampooing it. Spray a little of that magic dust in your hair, and VOILA, clean hair for the day, and an extra half hour of sleep before you get the day started.

It’s 6:00am again. There’s that pesky alarm telling you “GUESS WHAT DAY IT IS?! HUMP DAYYYYYYY!” Forget that alarm. You need that extra 20 again. Snooze it, baby. And throw that phone across the room to spite its best efforts to wake you up. You’re not having it. You, once again, don’t need to wash that hair, because you’ve got the miracle spray. Nobody will ever know you haven’t actually washed your hair in 2 days, because that dry shampoo is doing the Lord’s work. Catch them Zzzs, girl.

“Hello again!” yells the alarm clock, but in a much more annoying, buzzing, headache-inducing way. Another 6:00am rolls around. To prevent becoming a bridge troll, you decide to wake up and actually wash your hair. In the shower, you notice some extra clumps of hair after shampooing your hair (with real shampoo). Why are you shedding like a husky in the summer? Is this permanent? What’s causing it? Why didn’t you just dry shampoo it again and every day for the rest of your life to avoid this reality?!

Well, let me tell you why. Dry shampoo is why. Look, dry shampoo is great in moderation… like once a week. But when you start using it over and over to avoid actually cleaning yourself, it takes a toll on your hair and your scalp. But why is that? How is it so marketable and popular if it causes hair loss? Because, like most things, if you overuse it, there will be some consequences.

Dry shampoo sucks out all the oils from your scalp and hair follicles, even the natural ones. So, if you do this one day, it may be fine and make your hair feel volumized, clean, and lucious. But what it’s doing behind the scenes is irritating your scalp. It’s even clumping together your individual hairs, much like itty-bitty dreadlocks. So what happens when you brush your hair when multiple hairs are clumped together? Well, instead of losing just the hairs in resting phase, or the dead hairs, you’re taking 2-3 other healthy hairs with it. This can cause bald spots, thinning, and patches of hair coming out on your fingers.

Real shampoo, you know, the wet stuff, hydrates your hair and your scalp, as well as cleans it by removing excess oil. It’s strongly recommended to not overuse dry shampoo, and to wash your hair every two-ish days or so. You also don’t need to overwash with wet shampoo. You can use just water to wash the oils from your scalp and hair, and still end up with a clean look. If you must use dry shampoo, use it in moderation, about 1-2 times per week. I suggest not using it back-to-back days. This just suffocates your hair and you’ll see the negative effects before too long.

While it’s a quick fix for the lazy, busy, and oily people out there, the long-term effects can be much worse. So the next time 6:00am rolls around, and you think you can snooze that alarm so you don’t have to wash your hair because of that “miracle powder”, think of the consequences of overusing dry shampoo, and how much earlier you’ll have to wake up in the future to fix the problems dry shampoo cause.

My Hair Regrowth

In 2019, I’ve written blog after blog about what you can do to regrow or thicken your hair. That’s all well and good, and it really is helpful, but I have yet to show you results in a real-life results. Well, here I am. As a guy who had extremely thin hair and tried my best to cover it up with products, different hair styles, hats, etc., I can tell you right now that I’m happier than ever with my hair… and here’s how!

thumbnail hairgrowthI made the move in January of 2019 to see Apollo Hair Replacement of Dallas/Fort Worth. It took me forever to make the decision. I was nervous, because I was extremely self conscious about my thinning hair. My hair was thinning at the crown of my head, so I couldn’t really see it all the time, and I didn’t really know how bad it was until late last year. I wore hats all the time, used filling products (almost like makeup) to cover up my bald spot, and even shaved my head a few times thinking I was “over it.” I was still so unhappy with my hair, so I did something about it.

I was fully prepared to go in and spend a good chunk of money on the surgery. But the recommendation I was given was to actually not have the hair replacement surgery. Instead, try taking pills for 90 days. These pills include biotin, finasteride, and minoxidil. I was (and still am) very diligent in taking these pills. It’s a once a day thing, and if you miss a day or two on accident it isn’t the end of the world, but in 2019, I think I might have missed five days total.

Again, I was thinning the most on the crown of my head, so I couldn’t really tell if it was working or not. One day after about three months of taking these pills, a friend came up to me and told me that my hair looked darker. I thought it was a bit odd, but didn’t think much of it. The next time I saw a group of friends, literally all of them mentioned my hair and how much darker and healthier it looked. I was still wearing a hat at this point, but I have a little bit longer hair so they could still see it. They told me to take my hat off so they could see it. Reluctantly, I removed my hat and they were amazed. Mind you, I hadn’t looked at the crown of my head in a very long time. I would always get a little upset when I saw how bad it was, and if I don’t look at it, it isn’t that bad, right? Terrible thought process. Anyways, I was happy with their comments, and kept taking the pills.

Fast forward to July. We’re seven months into taking these pills on a daily basis. I went on a fishing trip with my dad and brother (both completely bald), and one of the first things they both asked was if I got a hair transplant. I told them I simply take these pills everyday, and they were both pretty much in shock. apollokyle2

It’s an incredible feeling when you’re so self conscious about something, then at some point excited to show off what you were self conscious about. It’s like when your hard work in the gym starts to show. It’s a great feeling, and I have zero problems fixing my hair and not wearing a hat anymore! Is my hair completely full like Brad Pitt? Absolutely not. But is it way thicker and healthier than it was a year ago? Absolutely. I’m going to continue with these pills, and maybe one day, if I want it to look even fuller and thicker, I may think about the hair transplant. But for now, my hair is so much better than what it was at the beginning of 2019, and I’m no longer self conscious or worried about it!

The Pros and Cons of Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are made of natural or synthetic hair, and are used to add length and volume to your hair. Hair extensions range in price depending on the type, style, length, and functionality. Synthetic hair extensions are more budget friendly, while the natural hair extensions can be pricey. Obviously, the natural hair extensions will be the easiest to style, even with heating tools, but they also require a bit more maintenance than synthetic.

So why would you get hair extensions? Well, to have more hair! Whether it’s length, volume, or if you happen to be thinning or have bald spots, hair extensions are a fairly simple way to add more hair to your head. For some people, hair grows extremely slow. Hair extensions are a great way to add the length you want to your hair without having to wait months for beautiful long locks. For others, it’s a way to add volume and some bounce to flat, thin hair. Hair extensions are also used by people with conditions such as Alopecia, because it adds full hair to super thin hair or a balding scalp.

If you’re thinking about hair extensions, be mindful of a few things! First, you always want a professional to install your hair extensions. If you try to do this yourself, you could end up damaging or even pulling out hair, which is the exact opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish. Be sure to not have your hair extensions put in too tightly. A lot of times, hair extensions, even done by a professional hair stylist, can be installed way too tightly and will constantly pull on your hair. Not only can this be painful, it can cause your hair to go into a resting phase and fall out. Always take care of your extensions! Treat it like your real hair, and you should be fine. Many people “set it and forget it”, but you’ll need to treat your extensions with care to keep it looking healthy and natural.

There are a few different types of hair extensions, so let’s talk about those!

Tape-in extensions

Tape-in hair extensions are the quickest to be installed. They are available up to 8 inches in length, and come in strips that can be taped in and maneuvered in between your real hair. While these hair extensions are easy and quick to install and they don’t require heating tools, they only last 4-6 weeks and certain hairdos are not advised, as they’ll pull the taped extensions out. It’s also not advisable that you swim with these extensions in, as it damages the adhesive strips.

Micro ring extensions

Micro ring hair extensions are a more intricate style of hair extensions. They are looped through your natural hair, then clamped by a metal bead. These extensions take roughly 5 hours to install, and last 2-3 months. They also don’t require heating tools, which is great for your scalp and natural hair. They can also be removed relatively easy and reused. However, if not done correctly, they can damage your scalp and natural hair. There are also hairdo restrictions with these, such as high ponytails or buns.

Weaving

Clip-in extensions

Clip-in hair extensions are the easiest to install because they literally, wait for it… clip in! They come in wefts of hair that clip to the base of your hair on top of your head. Clip them to the roots and you’re good to go! You can install and remove them at will, and they last a long time! However, they’re fairly cheap, which means they won’t last as long, and you should also remove them before going to sleep.

Fused extensions

You can get fused hair extensions by using a hot or cold method. Hot fused extensions definitely requires a professional, and it takes a keratin U-tip bond lined with silicone to be attached. It bonds to your roots with a heating tool. These take the longest of all the methods, but are the most natural looking. Also the most expensive. The cold fusion method is similar to hot, except it’s pre-tipped with a keratin-based polymer that needs to be attached to your roots. This requires a special tool, but zero heat, saving your scalp and natural hair from damaging temperatures.

With so many different ways to apply extensions, you should be happy with the options! You can use budget and time friendly extensions, or splurge on natural hair extensions for those special occasions!

Weight Loss and Hair Loss

Congratulations! You’ve held on to a strict diet for weeks, maybe months, and you’re finally seeing results. The scale is dropping. Your body is slimming. You’re feeling healthier with more energy. Every morning when you step on the scale, you feel better and better. But one morning you look in the mirror while you’re brushing your hair, and you notice an excessive amount of hair in your brush. You run your hand through your hair, and pull out a clump of locks. What on earth is happening? Why is your hair falling out? Have no fear… the answers are here!

Often times, diets with the quickest results are the most popular diets. For example, the Keto diet, juice cleanses, and low carb diets like Atkins. For the most part, we live in a results-right-now world, and people don’t want to, or can’t, stick to a plan that requires dedication and time. These quick result diets are not always the healthiest options, especially because each of our bodies react to them differently.

Protein, iron, and other dietary supplement deficiencies can cause health problems, extreme weight loss, and, yes, even hair loss. Sometimes the lack of these nutrients and others will cause your hair to essentially starve and fall out.

The good news is that there are multiple ways to lose weight without your diet affecting your hair!

Much like the Keto diet, the intake of proteins like red meat, chicken, pork, and fish is a great way to keep your hair, lose weight while helping your hair stay strong and, more importantly, intact.

Eggs are also high in protein, and so are healthy greens like spinach. In fact, most of the time, if it’s green, it’s good for you in terms of vegetables. Think spinach, avocado, lettuce, kale, etc. These help keep your body healthy while retaining your head of hair!

The daily recommended calorie intake is typically 2,000. The key to a successful diet is not to reduce the amount of calories you intake, but to burn more than you take in. Continue eating 2,000+ healthy calories per day, but work out hard to burn that down to, let’s say 1,200 net calories. Try to never “not eat” just to reduce your calorie intake. That’s dangerous for your health and your hair!

When you fluctuate in Body Mass Index (BMI), your body becomes stressed. This process signals your hair follicles to go into a resting phase and fall out. Don’t shock your body and you’ll keep your hair!

Diets can be difficult, but very beneficial. Learn discipline and routine, and you’ll keep your health and your hair!

Thyroid Conditions and Your Hair

The thyroid is part of the endocrine system, and it’s located in the lower neck below the Adam's apple. Your thyroid is actually pretty small (roughly 1oz in weight), but is crucial to bodily function and your health. It produces hormones that are distributed directly into the bloodstream, and those hormones regulate things like your energy, cell reproduction, and even -- you guessed it -- hair growth. The thyroid does much more, but let’s focus on hair loss and what may be causing it, in terms of your thyroid.

There are essentially two conditions related to hair loss and your thyroid: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid that can cause extreme weight gain and fatigue. This is a slow developing condition that you may not realize you have until months later due to the symptoms showing up later in its life span. Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid that can cause extreme weight loss and severe anxiety. Both of these conditions can also cause hair loss.

Hair loss due to hyperthyroidism and hyperthyroidism is usually the result of severe and prolonged cases. It affects the entire scalp, not just patches. The good news is that the chances of your hair growing back are very good after treatment. Because the hair life cycle is a long, hair loss due to thyroid disease becomes apparent several months after the onset of thyroid disease. Often times after treatment, hair loss can become more severe and apparently, but if you keep consistent with treatment, you should see results in 6-9 months.

Thyroid conditions can cause hair loss if they are severe and go untreated. Understanding how these conditions cause hair loss involves understanding how hair grows.

Your doctor may prescribe certain drugs used to treat thyroid conditions, but those drugs may also contribute to hair thinning. It can be hard to tell if the drug or your thyroid condition is causing your hair to thin due to hair’s long life cycle, but continuing to see your doctor about the issue should help you with your strategy for regrowth.

Mild forms of thyroid conditions don’t generally lead to thinning hair. As a result, working with your doctor to keep your condition under control with medication may keep your hair thicker or regenerate growth. Results will likely not be immediate because hair takes some time to develop and then grow.

While hyper/hypothyroidism is a serious condition and you should always consult your doctor, Apollo Hair Replacement of Dallas/Fort Worth offers free consultations. We can advise and consult on your condition, and how to properly regrow your hair after your issue has been diagnosed. We specialize in full and total hair regrowth, replacement, and even wigs!

While thyroid conditions are serious and need to be medically attended to, there’s no reason for you to lose your hair permanently. Apollo can help you get your life and hair back! Contact us today for your free consultation!
